- Caia Coopman, Untitled, Courtesy La Luz de Jesus Gallery
Though painters Caia Koopman and Mark Gleason take vastly different approaches, both make the human/animal relationship a cornerstone of their work. Koopman's whimsical illustrations depict coteries of willowy female subjects surrounded by equally fragile flora and fauna, in a style informed by 19th-century fairy tales, '60s psychedelia, and Juxtapoz covers. Gleason uses a more lifelike style to match exquisitely rendered human protagonists with their animal-kingdom counterparts (e.g. lanky little girl and frog). With a hint of wit, a dash of spiritualism, and a nod to the dark corners of fantasy, the psychologically fraught environment that these characters inhabit is anything but natural.
