Art Mondongo: Gaslighting

As students of cultural iconoclasm, the members of Argentinian art collective Mondongo — Juliana Laffitte, Manuel Mendanha, and Agustina Picasso — regularly reveal the dark subjects that underpin our everyday surroundings. Gaslighting, the group's current show at Track 16, refers to psychological abuse wherein victims question the reliability of their own memories and perception. To address this, the artists fuse thread, beads, tar, wax, and plasticine in a painstakingly slow process that produces intricate mixed-media paintings. The works tackle archetypes such as love, death, creation, and sex with a style that hovers between playful and perverse.
