The history of the Gits, a Seattle band from the early '90s, starkly combines moments of exhilaration and devastation. In July 1993, just as the band was poised for a major breakthrough after spending years amassing a loyal following, lead singer Mia Zapata was found raped and murdered. The case went unsolved for seven years, until DNA evidence identified Zapata's killer — which is where documentary filmmaker Kerri O'Kane picks up the tragic story. Despite the closing of the case and the sentencing of Zapata's murderer, The Gits paints a picture of friends, family, and bandmates who grieve for the vibrant musician as much today as they did 15 years ago.
