- Nathan Moore's road to rock 'n roll reads like the dream of many a spiky-haired teen. While working as a merch guy on tour with the Slip, the band overheard him singing in a hotel shower — that night, he was onstage. Later, while Moore was visiting the Slip during Boston's blizzard of 2003, the new foursome recorded a debut album under the name Surprise Me Mr. Davis. Today, the indie-rock outfit continues to lay down tracks that bounce between the catchy hooks and emotional urgency of Arcade Fire and the jazz-inflected, smarty-pants pop of early Elvis Costello. – Phil Kropoth
