From director Matt Huffman comes a new adaptation of Irwin Shaw's 1936 antiwar masterpiece, Bury the Dead. Shaw, who went on to pen the acclaimed novel Rich Man, Poor Man, wrote this play during the buildup to WWII, but he intended it as a broader meditation on the strangling injustice of class warfare. With poor families losing their children in combat while sons of the rich stayed safely at home, the soldiers facing each other in battle often had more in common than with their own leaders. This irony gives the work a socialist bent, but the fact that it is narrated by dead soldiers lends it a tragic timeliness that transcends politics.
