The Landmark says…

In 1968, a French teen named Philippe Petit sat in a dentist's office reading a magazine that featured the plans for what would become NYC's World Trade Center. Petit, a street performer with (ahem) high ambitions, drew a line from one tower to the other and vowed to one day walk between them. Six years later, with the assistance of a merry band of helpers, Petit stepped out on a wire 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of New York and made the 140-foot-long journey. Because of the secrecy, complexity, and sheer daring involved in the feat, James Marsh's doc treats Petit's crossing as one of the greatest capers ever pulled.
