Traditional paper and canvas simply won't do for New York artist Josh Dorman, who employs vintage maps and textbook diagrams as foundations for his fantastical collages. But instead of being practical, literal guides to concrete destinations, the found materials translate the ambiguous and symbolically fraught travels of self-exploration. In Within Four Miles: The World of Josh Dorman, the resulting mixed-media pieces are personal and sacred to the artist, but also communicate their talismanic power to the viewer. In conjunction with this CAFAM exhibition, George Billis Gallery's Culver City location features a related collection of new work by the nationally renowned artist, opening in October.
