In this band biopic, Shane West delivers a charismatic, near-perfect performance as the self-inventing, self-immolating, and fatally brilliant Darby Crash, founder of LA punk outfit the Germs. Dramatizations and faux interview footage are woven together in a seamless blend of true and reconstructed events by a stellar cast, including Bijou Phillips as Lorna Doom. The tone is set by a deftly written screenplay that reflects the edgy, addled urgency of the mid-'70s in Los Angeles. The backstories and backstage antics behind the Germs' rise and demise are compelling, but the best parts of the movie are the plentiful live scenes, performed by the actors with an uncanny accuracy and reverential channeling of the riot-starting originals.
