Unless you're a goth historian, 19th-century cadavers, Victorian lace, and anatomical illustrations are not often everyday topics of interest. But Canadian artist Cindy Stelmackowich stumbled upon some historic texts while doing research for her PhD and made them the basis of her most recent body of work. Using a digital camera to record the medical illustrations, Stelmackowich dissects the imagery, fusing it with other objects from the era — glass vessels, etchings of destroyed ships — to create haunting collages. The result is an uneasy mix of science's emotional detachment and the art-making process' personal nature.
