Note:
There is a gallery talk with exhibition curator Professor Betty Ann Brown on Monday, August 25th (10am).
Comprising selections from the nearly 1,000 works that European-native-turned California-great Hans Burkhardt personally donated to Cal State Northridge (where he taught before his death), this exhibition considers the artist's use of modernist abstraction, expressionism, and poetic naturalism in paintings, drawings, and prints. Burkhardt's works address the mysteries of everyday life — the dismay of war, the reality of love, the deceit of politics — while considering the socio-political events of his time. Accompanying the exhibit is a catalog of essays written by curator and art-history professor Betty Ann Brown and Jack Rutberg, whose LA gallery represents the artist's considerable estate.
