Last year, Rogue Wave — they of the whispering-to-soaring, Pacific Coast anthem — signed with surf troubadour Jack Johnson's label for their latest release, Asleep At Heaven's Gate. The result of this potentially cred-killing faux pas was a welcome shift from full- to wide-screen. And while RW's songs now paint a more focused, precisely orchestrated picture, the band's existential and sentimental ponderings are still lined with loud, hollow drums and sepia, sun-stroked harmonies. The group's California blues, meanwhile, gaze further into the distance than ever before, making it far more difficult for listeners to break the stare. Tonight, Rogue Wave visit the Hotel Café for an acoustic set.
