Although there's barely been a peep from Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay since she made her shatteringly gorgeous 2002 film, Morvern Callar, the director's relatively small oeuvre is still epic in scope. Ratcatcher, her 1999 feature debut, stands as its centerpiece. The film follows James, a 12-year-old boy growing up in the outer slums of Glasgow, Scotland, in the early '70s; after James accidentally drowns a neighborhood boy while roughhousing, he's propelled into a coming-of-age trajectory in which he must find his place among the older boys, and come to terms with his blossoming sexuality.
