If her fireworks on The View are any indication of her flair for drama, Rosie O'Donnell's Hollywood Bowl debut in the world's longest-running musical should have been a zinger. Sadly, her young son broke his wrist and she was forced to drop out of the cast at the last minute. But not to worry, satirized in South Park's own musical masterpiece, Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Trey Parker's a big fan of French Revolutionary numbers), tonight's staged adaptation of Boublil and Schönberg's 1980 classic features other examples of inventive casting plus the acoustic accoutrements of the hearty Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The whole shebang takes its inspiration from Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name.
