Art: Photography Jehad Nga: My Shadow, My Opponent

Daring photographer Jehad Nga has previously documented poverty and violence from Darfur to Iraq — now, he takes his camera into the world of boxing. In My Shadow, My Opponent, Nga depicts men training for the Kibera Olympic boxing team, and in the process tells a story of social imprisonment, isolation, and release. The half-lit portraits reveal hands and faces emerging from an engulfing darkness. The results are more than sports photographs — they're humanitarian documents of one of Kenya's most dangerous cities, taped knuckles and all.
