After cutting her teeth with the likes of Antony and Rufus Wainwright, indie-soul chanteuse Joan Wasser (or Joan as Police Woman) finally stepped centerstage on her 2006 debut Real Life, a deft melange of chamber pop, torch ballads, and singer/songwriter rock. Like this year's To Survive, the raw emotion is masked by elegant arrangements and soft-focus production. But stripped of the polish, Wasser's vulnerabilities are even more commanding. Live, songs like "Hard White Wall" feel closer to PJ Harvey's raw sensuality than, say, Regina Spektor or Feist. She'll still sprinkle some Astrud Gilberto pixie dust here and there, but it's Wasser's wounded, dusty grit that leaves you breathless.
