Jack Rutberg Fine Arts says…

In the years bracketing WWII, a great many artists were among those fleeing to US shores from the specter of Nazi Germany. In fine-art terms especially, this generation's emigration came to shape the very foundation of American modern art. While many, if not most, of these folks landed and stayed in NYC, more than a few, such as Oskar Fischinger and the subject of this ambitious survey, Hans Burkhardt, went west, where their fortunes grew along with LA's. From his 1937 arrival to his death in 1994, Burkhardt's frightfully sensual, heavily worked, confrontational paintings — sometimes famously featuring human skulls — were among the most moving, masterful, and important works of their time.
