Lured by the lucrative business of Internet pornography, "ladyboy" Raquela longs to escape her native Philippines for a new life in Paris. Queen Raquela has all the ingredients of an old-fashioned Disney fairy tale, but its heroine is a transsexual Cebu City prostitute who defies cliché. Director Olaf de Fleur Johannesson masterfully combines documentary techniques with a loosely fictitious narrative, thus coining a new cinematic style — the "visionmentary." The result is an affecting film that explores the lives and dreams of the Philippines' "TGirls," whose eloquent tales of survival are rarely heard.
