Anne Faith Nicholls remixes folk art with her quasi-surrealist, richly symbolic narrative works that have roots in the traditional Western high-art style. The result, which she dubs "Neofolk," is her most recent aesthetic exploration. This new collection consists of moody oil and acrylic paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installations that speak to the British Columbia-born, Seattle-raised artist's experience as a recent Los Angeles transplant. Nicholls' creations are refreshingly candid in a way that is stylized yet also authentic; they strike a pose that prizes outsider frankness above big-city sophistry.
