Finally, there's something to photograph on the beach in Malibu besides the shirtless antics of Matthew McConaughey. The newsworthy occasion is the Malibu Surf Association Classic, a venerable wave-riding contest that dates back over 45 years and was the first local surf competition to be broadcast on TV in 1964. Called "one of surfing's Yankee Stadiums" by the MSA's Donny Wilson, First Point has a medium tide and cobblestone bottom that makes wipeouts especially gnarly. The contest is eco-conscious, but that doesn't mean the hardcore competition isn't on; after a 2007 loss to the Santa Barbara Surf Club, the MSA is keen to reclaim the crown.
