Loosely based on George Langelaan's 1957 short story and David Cronenberg's 1986 film adaptation, The Fly wings its way to the Chandler Pavilion tonight for its US debut courtesy of the LA Opera. Mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose plays Veronica Quaife, a journalist documenting a hellish experiment gone awry — a scientist's mutation of himself into a fly. At its heart, The Fly is the tale of a disastrous love triangle; peel away another layer and it's a dissertation on the relationship between technology and terror. The Fly is the first opera by Academy Award-winning composer Howard Shore, and comes with big-name support: Plácido Domingo conducts and David Cronenberg directs.
