Encyclopaedia Metallum lists a whopping 12 bands named Witchcraft, two of which are from Sweden. But only one of these acts sports cable-knit sweaters and bell-bottoms while unabashedly copping early Sabbath, Pentagram, and other heavy psych-rock bands from the '70s. The group's latest effort, The Alchemist, changes things up, reaching in poppier directions and paying homage to the 13th Floor Elevators and Donovan. Witchcraft even delve into the gruff hooks of garage rock, forgoing the hallucinogenic, pentatonic-scale jam sessions in favor of more straightforward aural assaults. The band headlines the second annual Manifest Destiny Fest tonight alongside similarly psyched-out odditiies like Earthless, Witch, and the Warlocks.
