LA painter Lisa Adams is something of a riddle. Her work is almost violently sweet, with a dulcet, wafting quality to representations of (mostly) plants, birds, and sky, but there is a sinister undercurrent to the otherwise pastoral prettiness of her surreal compositions. Songbirds clutch curlicue vines whose thorns and buds resemble barbed wire; pale, cloud-festooned skies are both expansive and claustrophobic. Her way of working the paint varies in nuanced response to the demands of her pictures: she is equally capable of an enamel-smooth skin and lumpy impasto, deconstructed abstraction and precise realism, and often deploys her full range in a single piece.
