Grey Gardens (1976)
-
- Grey Gardens
On the heels of '60s and '70s documentaries like Gimme Shelter and The Salesman, cinema verite filmmakers and fathers of the American documentary Albert and David Maysles ventured out to the eastern end of Long Island. There, the duo captured kooky New York blue bloods and society outsiders "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" at their dilapidated mansion house, Grey Gardens. Within those grey-shingled walls, the Maysles brothers chronicled the "amazing slow psychic train wreck" of mother and daughter Beale. This afternoon, Grey Gardens plays at LACMA. After the cult film's screening, stick around for a Q&A with the venerable Albert Maysles and his pal and fellow documentarian Liz Goldwyn.
