If you've only been following the guitar-based artistry of Nels Cline since he joined indie supergroup Wilco in 2004, you've been missing out on some must-have fundamentals of post-punk and experimental avant-jazz. Witness his early work with bluesy alt-country outfit the Geraldine Fibbers, his string of solo releases, and multi-member projects with Banyan, the Nels Cline Trio, and, most recently, the Nels Cline Singers — a revolving cast of open-minded instrumentalists who help Cline do his thing. He's set to drop Coward, a new solo project, in February — a selection of melodic ambient tracks with a symbol-rich narrative suite, it pushes the envelope on man/machine expressivity, industrial noise rock, and futuristic robot jazz — so expect some new art from the master tonight.
