Wicked maestro Stephen Schwartz revives his '70s rock opera Pippin as the opening production of the Mark Taper 2009 season. A 1981 musical comedy inspired by Pippin the Hunchback — son of the Emperor Charlemagne and perhaps the best-known tights-bedecked truthseeker this side of Robin Hood — the new production takes on another twist: American sign language. Deaf West Theatre teams up with the Center Theatre Group to offer a unique spin on this oft-forgotten American classic.
