Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the LA Philharmonic in the West Coast premiere of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's La Passion de Simone. Based on the life of enigmatic French philosopher Simone Weil, the libretto is furnished by Lebanese author Amin Maalouf; current orchestra resident Peter Sellars directs the ambitious hour-long oratorio, with the soprano part written specifically for Dawn Upshaw. The latter's masterful voice is enriched by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, while dances by Michael Schumacher further serve as a portal into the short-circuited world of the mystical Weil.
