Photojournalist Martha Cooper literally wrote the book — several books actually — on the co-emergent graffiti and hip-hop scenes in New York over the course of the last four decades. Her dramatic yet intimate photographs of the backdrops and soundtracks of urban youth culture helped galvanize generations interested in the raw art forms and the societal gardens in which they flourished. A mark of the ubiquity her work helped engender, a recent book found her documenting related works of art executed on postal stickers; still, there's nothing quite like seeing these richly printed black-and-whites big and up close.
