Chronicling the misadventures of feisty, forward-thinking Martha, Battle Hymn is a touching, comedic, and thoughtful survey of American history, as seen through the eyes of a young mother-to-be. Determined not to birth her child during the violence of the Civil War, 16-year-old Martha resolves to remain pregnant until peace prevails. Unfortunately, she doesn't anticipate two world wars, Vietnam, or the horror of 9/11 — and so remains pregnant for 150 years. This pared-down Circle X production features a medley of colorful characters breathing life into author Jim Leonard's words, confirming that US history isn't nearly as dull as most of our 11th-grade teachers made it seem.
