The Weisman Museum at Pepperdine's Malibu campus launches one of its most important exhibitions to date with this long-overdue survey of late painter Robert Dowd's lively and controversial Pop Art Money. A simple conceit gets dynamic treatment in Dowd's voluminous series of overlarge paintings, in which the visages and aesthetic styles of great artists from Picasso to Warhol supplant dead presidents on reproduced paper money. Where's the controversy in that, you ask? Due in large part to Dowd's unrelated political activities, he was targeted for investigation by J. Edgar Hoover's FBI, on the basis that his paintings constituted counterfeit currency. Ah, the '60s.
