Santa Monica Museum of Art says…

East meets West on many levels as the Santa Monica Museum of Art welcomes octogenarian lion of painting Arnold Mesches to both of its project rooms. Using his characteristic fleshy impasto and markedly literary sensibility, Mesches portrays lush, baroque, and surreal large-scale scenes of decaying grandeur, which may or may not portend more widespread gloom. The main exhibition hall, meanwhile, is fairly overrun with Elias Sime's herd of mesmerizing — and, at times, emotionally difficult — hand-stitched conceptual sculptures and mixed-media assemblage-based paintings. Portraying human, animal, and hybrid spirit forms with soulful craft, Sime both draws inspiration from and transcends the indigenous artistic traditions of Ethiopian culture.
