LACMA says…

Rendering and paraphrasing India's ancient epic tales of archetypal gods and goddesses at war with demonic bad guys, Heroes and Villains: The Battle for Good in India's Comics offers traditional and modernized incarnations of buffed-up Ramas and svelte Devis kicking Evil's ass. Included are vintage Indian comic books with tiger-riding, multi-armed, blue-hued deities; the East-meets-West adventures of Marvel Comics' Spiderman in Indian pantaloons; a hulking Rama and luscious Wonder Woman bringing down the dark side in DC Comics' Godwar; and Liquid Comics' pencil-and-ink collaborations chronicling the intense futuristic sagas of Ramayan and Devi. Illuminating and contextualizing the modern manifestations of the Indian epics is a collection of simple and exquisite traditional 18th and 19th century Indian paintings.
