Philippa Blair's abstract, collage-based symphonies truly fulfill the classical adage that, "music is an abstract painting executed on a canvas of silence." Both enshrining and obliterating evidence of the artist's hand, her sweeping odes to instinctive mark-making and asymmetrically balanced assembly of rich detail and poetic voids are elegant and symphonic. Jayme Odgers, by contrast, wrangles the notorious vicissitudes of watercolor into crisp, evocative portraits that bespeak both technical skill and deep empathetic connections to his subjects.
