Note:
On October 29, UCLA Live presents An Evening with R. Crumb. Enter to win a pair of tickets to the talk through Book Soup.
R. Crumb's interpretation of the Book of Genesis is at once disturbing, sacrilegious, violent, and debauched, but paired with a holy text, Crumb's work takes on a thought-provoking tone, questioning the very sacredness of words. In his introduction, the notorious comic-book artist writes that he believes the Bible is not the word of God, but instead, "the words of men," and so he illustrates the first chapter of the Bible. Crumb's telling unveils how racy the religious text is, and more importantly, actually makes people want to read the Bible.
