Chi-town quartet Pelican churn their guitars relentlessly, beating percussive rhythms across dark, post-metal riffs. A sweeping rush of sound, 2005's The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw crowned the band kings of the post-Metallica, indie-metal landscape, offering nods to the progressive approach of contemporaries like Isis and Red Sparowes. While the band can certainly bring the noise, the most harrowing moments come when there are no lyrics: it's in those moments that you spend 25 terrifying seconds anticipating the crash to come.
