Independent artist/curator York Chang has spent years researching the elusive history of an obscure, but by all accounts virulent, aesthetic movement active in Latin America since the 1970s. The Visceral Realists were a collective of poets and artists whose emblematic works included everything from the publication of manifestos to the kidnapping of cultural officials; the incitement of museum riots, and the production of haunting, psychologically charged objects and performance-based artifacts. The mystery surrounding the group's origins and the question of its actual existence may be dispelled when Chang interviews one of the movement's founding members, Gustavo Raynal—but it's more likely that it will only deepen.
