Although some of the objects in TOOLS may seem familiar, they are most definitely far from from ordinary. Jointly organized by Williamson Gallery director Stephen Nowlin and Los Angeles artist/writer John O'Brien, the exhibition's tooled and re-tooled artworks defy categorizations of utility, historical importance, and aesthetics and prove that natural science and the arts are often interchangeable. The exhibition is also Art Center's contribution to ORIGINS: Art & Ideas 2009, a festival organized by the Pasadena Arts Council intended to highlight the wealth of technology and art resources in this egghead-laden city.

Art Center College of Design says…

TOOLS explores how humans extend the limits of their biology, and includes art as well as artifacts from natural history and science—from ancient stone tools to contemporary sculpture to Mars rovers. Tools and Creativity, a class from Art Center's Integrated Studies Department, will use a portion of the gallery as its studio throughout the exhibit with class projects on display as they are developed. TOOLS is a part of the ORIGINS: Art & Ideas Festival.
