Note:
The artist speaks about his work at the gallery at 2pm on Sunday, December 6.
Michael Arata is one of LA's best known "artist's artists," a man with serious chops as a curator as well as a prolific creator beyond the international exhibiting of his own original work. His work often involves found and manipulated photographs, whether from magazines or personal archives of various eras, which he uses to form the basis of mixed media meditations on absence and identity. Remember brings several of these threads together, as Arata paints a series of "portraits" of women using their hairstyles rather than faces to re-construct their images. Based on photographs from the evidence files of serial killer Bill Bradford, these paintings simultaneously represent memory, anonymity, loss, and promise, and track the way images change meaning over time.
