Collection: MOCA's First Thirty Years
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles says:
Collection: MOCA's First Thirty Years is the largest installation to date of the museum's world-renowned permanent collection, which numbers nearly 6,000 works. Featuring a selection of more than 500 works by over 200 artists at both of the museum's downtown Los Angeles locations, the exhibition provides a comprehensive history of the last 70 years of contemporary art and surveys every significant movement and development during this period.
LOCATIONS: MOCA Grand Avenue, 250 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012; and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, 152 North Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90013
Digging deep into its well-endowed vaults, MOCA pulls out some heavy hitters—including Mark Rothko, Alberto Giacometti, and Anselm Kiefer—to celebrate 30 years of collecting in the appropriately named exhibition, Collection: MOCA's First Thirty Years. While the show's curators take a glance backwards to highlight MOCA's prowess in collecting over the last three decades, they also hint at a brighter future by including works by acclaimed contemporary artists like Chris Ofili and Laura Owens. But it's the exhibition's title that really says it all, intimating that we haven't seen the last of this prestigious institution's shopping skills.
