“Through Spring, the Getty gets medieval with an exhibition of illustrated manuscripts culling ancient Christian, Muslim, and Eastern wisdom from past glory days when science and magic were viewed as impossibly inextricable in spirit and fact. The collection vividly portrays such long-lost esoteric pursuits as "celestial medicine" and secret-language crafting, as well as some very impressive artistry, originally confined to private viewings by learned types of the era (think popes and alchemists). Now, the set of 50 some manuscripts are displayed together for the first time, and accessible to anyone with a curious mind and a ride up the 405.”
Medieval Muslim and Christian medicine, Chinese acupuncture, secret experiments in alchemical laboratories, codebooks for keeping secrets secret, and French and Persian visions of the cosmos that blend science with spirituality are among some of the treasures on display. The Getty Research Institute presents these highlights from an extraordinary collection of illustrated manuscripts from the Lawrence J. Schoenberg collection, displayed publicly for the first time. The manuscripts probe into the history of science and ideas and demonstrate the circulation of knowledge around the world and across cultures during the medieval and early modern periods.
