Hammer Museum says…

In conjunction with the landmark exhibition The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb's Book of Genesis, the Hammer screens 1995's definitive biographical documentary on the artist. Filled with awkward sarcasm and punctuated by images of the artist's signature, counterculture comics, Crumb exposes the family dysfunction and art-versus-commerce struggle that informed his work. Crumb repeatedly expresses his general distaste with the commercial use of his most famous pieces, including Fritz the Cat and his cover of the Cheap Thrills album for Big Brother and the Holding Company. But the interviews with family, friends, and colleagues — alternately hilarious and cringe-inducing — go furthest in illuminating Crumb's cantankerous eccentricity. The pre-screening lecture discusses the constant struggle to thrive in a dysfunctional family that pervades Crumb.
