Tonight's discussion pairs a young American scholar of Persian heritage whose main focus is clearing up misapprehensions about Islamic history and culture — with an eye toward geopolitical detente, and a Nobel Prize-winning novelist and journalist who examines every nuance of life in his ancestral and current hometown of Istanbul. Reza Aslan and Orhan Pamuk share a keen interest in the turbulent negotiation of the East-West divide, but where Aslan takes a broad view with implications for US foreign policy, Pamuk looks through the other end of that telescope, offering his own and others' life stories as a way to measure that which both unites and divides humanity.
