Film-school geeks (members A.J. Jackson and Aaron Sharp met as students at Chapman University) make good in Saint Motel. The retro rockers blend incisive guitar lines with soaring vocals in songs that shift just as the chorus starts to stick in your head. The band's vintage style is all smoking cigarettes and sun-faded vinyl; onstage, the charismatic four-piece never fails to entertain. They are joined in their efforts to set the Roxy stage on fire by Los Angeles twosome Rumspringa, who fuse powerful guitar riffs with rhythmic lyrics, creating a refreshingly original mixture of Americana and crunk. The bearded boys of Red Arrow Messenger bring their like-minded approach to indie Americana, and Beatles-worshiping beach-pop purveyors Army Navy round out a very fine bill with their sweet-toothed, straight-laced, floor-stomping rockers.
