Los Angeles painter and poet Matthew Heller has hit a stride with his latest exhibition at Galerie Anaïs, Bergamot's newest tenant. Well known for years among the young collector set for the jaunty, raw romance of his graffiti-inspired near-abstractions, Heller's style has become increasingly confident, loose, and comfortable with paradox and ambiguity—the result of a maturing style and hard work. In The Great, Heller's compositions feature his trademark silhouetted figures, like crime scene tape angels triangulated in empty space, along with diagrams referencing quantum theory. But there are surprises, too, such as the softly, expertly rendered drawings, and the large painted canvas containing Heller's own gently sharp and evocative poems.
