There is sometimes a disconnect between one's idea of a place and one's actual experience. Artist Jeff Gambill works precisely in this in-between, using a recent sojourn to Japan as his inspiration for a series of small paintings. Alternating between soft washes and impasto painting techniques, Gambill distills Japan's visual heritage into intimate, abstracted impressions without losing the sense of place. By focusing on details — a door, a corner, some cherry blossoms — Gambill captures both the abstract aesthetic essence of Japan and his memory of it through patterns, surface treatments, and the subtlety of suggestion.
