Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles says…

"I don't know why they are called Old Masters," notes renowned da Vinci scholar Carlo Pedretti, "when in fact, they were young radicals." Pedretti is at the center of the Italian Cultural Institute's current exhibition, which pairs The Last Angel by video installation artist (and hometown hero) Bill Viola with a group of da Vinci drawings rarely exhibited in the US. Angel in the Flesh is both the most famous of these drawings—depicting a scandalously androgynous figure of beatific sensuality—and the title of Pedretti's newly released book, a saucy scholarly tome on the life of da Vinci's muse and companion, Salai. The unexpectedly familial correspondences between da Vinci's and Viola's angels occasions a meditative sense of wonder, and demonstrates the enduring vitality and salience of the radical master.
