“Mapping the musical topography of the vast state of California, the LA Philharmonic's three-week West Coast, Left Coast Festival brings some of our best performances to Walt Disney Concert Hall. The KCRW-sponsored music celebration of left-coast creativity is curated by the Creative Chair at the LA Phil, John Adams, who maintains that the festival's aim "is to discover whether there is indeed such an identifying characteristic as the California sensibility.”
John Adams composed The Dharma at Big Sur (for 6-string electric violin and orchestra) for the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall. The soloist’s astonishingly virtuosic “improvisations” are all written out in detail, which is hard to believe when you hear the performance.
