BMWs get rock-star parking at LACMA this month — that is, those BMWs fortunate enough to have played canvas to some of contemporary art's biggest stars. These Art Cars are touring the world this year, including this brief stop at our local museum's light-festooned BP Grand Entrance on the Miracle Mile. Back in '75, Hervé Poulain commissioned sculptor Alexander Calder to design his racing BMW; since then, 16 artists, including David Hockney and Jenny Holzer, have used Beemers as their raw material. Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg designed the four motor coaches displayed at LACMA; their pit stop is accompanied by film footage of the iconic artists in action.
