Kim Abeles makes work in a variety of alternative media, with a special fondness for maps, both topographical and environmental, as well as art inspired by patterns of movement in city streets and skies. The imagery formed by particulate matter as it floats through the urban backdrop has formed the literal and metaphoric content of a series of her installations; now, fittingly, Abeles' work is on view all over the city. This Downtown LA Phantom Gallery show features a selection of pieces from the artist's Smog Collectors and Signs of Life series, among her most political to date. Meanwhile, the concurrent Location Studies show at the Torrance Art Museum looks at a compendium of international locations that played host to her immersive residence projects.
