The French Fauvist painter Henri Matisse began a simple, 30-lithograph portfolio in 1941, and seven years later transformed it into a 128-page volume entitled Florilege des Amours de Ronsard. Having borrowed works from the lyrical poet Pierre Ronsard, the artist updated the 16th-century French writing, illustrating each chosen poem and designing and decorating the box in which the volume was to be housed. The lithographs portray many of Ronsard and Matisse's best known themes: dancers, nudes, florals, and music, commingling visual art with book-making and poetry.
