Wagnerians of the world unite tonight, at what promises to be LA Opera's exceptional treatment of its first Ring Cycle. Part Pufnstuf/part hallucinogen-enhanced Lord of the Rings, Das Rheingold is the prelude to the three sagas that make up Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelungen). Arguably aimed at hardcore opera-heads (2.75 hours, no intermission), Rheingold revolves around phantasmagorical creatures of the German folk underworld: giants, goddesses, dwarfs, and Rhineland maidens, all struggling against a catastrophic curse. From the first mesmerizing chords to the climactic finale, Das Rheingold features some of the most exquisite music written by the controversial and iconic composer Richard Wagner.
